"Instant" means something different depending on which of these three you are looking at, and treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to scope the wrong project. Each solves a different layer of the same problem.

SWIFT gpi Instant

Layers instant tracking and same-day settlement onto the existing correspondent banking network rather than replacing it. Coverage follows wherever SWIFT and its member banks already reach, which is nearly everywhere, at the cost of still routing through the correspondent chain the other two approaches are trying to shorten.

BIS Nexus

Interlinks domestic instant payment systems directly, so a payment moves IPS-to-IPS rather than bank-to-bank. Founding markets are India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, with Indonesia as a special observer, targeting live implementation in 2026 and a potential reach of 1.7 billion people. It is not a competitor to SWIFT gpi Instant so much as a different architecture entirely, one that bypasses correspondent banking rather than speeding it up.

Bilateral RTP Bridges

Point-to-point links between two countries’ real-time rails, the approach behind connections like Singapore’s PayNow or India’s UPI. Faster to stand up than a multilateral scheme, but each new corridor is a new build. The EUR-USD immediate cross-border pilot announced in 2022 under this model has gone quiet since, with no commercial rollout news since its early testing phase, a reminder that bilateral links do not automatically scale into a network.

Why Pre-Validation Stops Being Optional

Correspondent banking’s multi-day settlement window used to double as an informal error-catching mechanism. Someone downstream had time to flag a bad beneficiary before funds moved. Instant and irrevocable settlement removes that window entirely. On a rail where a payment clears in seconds and cannot be pulled back, the payee check has to happen before submission, not after, because there is no repair queue left to catch the error afterward.

iPiD verifies the payee before the payment enters any of these rails, so the check happens on the one timeline that still allows a correction. Stress-test your instant-rail rollout against real payee data.
